From time to time I pick up duplicate copies of early boxing and wrestling books. Those that are in good enough condition will be listed for sale here.
Self-Defence or The Art of Boxing by Professor Ned Donnelly
This book, by the famous Professor of boxing Ned Donnelly, edited by the renowned swordsman Coporal Major John Musgrave Waite was printed in 1897 and is the much sought after "New and Revised Edition".
The book is good quality, with gold embossed, green cloth boards with a little shelf wear. Fully intact with 146 pages, some very light foxing in one or two places, with some light staining to a few pages (possibly blood). The binding is a little loose, but not worryingly so.
Ned Donnelly was a famous boxing instructor during the transitional period who was the professor of boxing to the London Athletic Club and taught alongside the great swordsman John M Waite.
Donnelly fought with great success during the latter days of the London Prize Ring, and after retiring from competition took up coaching, and on the date this book was published had taught no fewer than 24 winners of the Queensberry Cup.
This is a good quality copy of a book that a beautiful example of the transitional style so favoured at the turn of the C19th. It is of great interest to fighters, historians, Bartitsu practitioners, and collectors alike.
